About The Formulas
This calculator uses four well-established formulas to estimate ideal body weight based on height and gender. Each formula was developed from different population studies and may give slightly different results.
The Four Formulas
- Robinson (1983): Often considered the most accurate modern formula. Based on updated metropolitan life insurance data.
- Miller (1983): Tends to give slightly higher values, particularly useful for larger-framed individuals.
- Devine (1974): Originally developed for drug dosage calculations. Widely used in clinical settings.
- Hamwi (1964): One of the earliest formulas. Provides a good baseline estimate.
Important Considerations
Ideal weight formulas do not account for muscle mass, body frame, or age. A muscular person may weigh more than their "ideal weight" while being perfectly healthy. Use these numbers as a general guideline alongside body fat percentage and other health markers.
