How Body Fat Is Calculated

This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, which estimates body fat from neck, waist (and hip for women) measurements relative to height. While not as precise as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing, it provides a reliable estimate for tracking changes over time.

How to Measure

  • Waist: Measure at the narrowest point (natural waist), typically at the navel level for men.
  • Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), with the tape sloping slightly downward at the front.
  • Hip (women): Measure at the widest point of the buttocks.
