What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using your height and weight to estimate body fat. The formula divides your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (kg/m²). While BMI is a useful screening tool, it does not directly measure body fat and may not accurately reflect health for very muscular individuals or older adults.

BMI Categories

  • Underweight (below 18.5): May indicate nutritional deficiency or other health issues. Consult a healthcare provider.
  • Normal (18.5 – 24.9): Generally indicates a healthy weight for most adults.
  • Overweight (25 – 29.9): May increase risk for certain health conditions. Lifestyle changes can help.
  • Obese (30+): Associated with higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions. Professional guidance recommended.

Limitations

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes and highly active individuals may have a "high" BMI despite having low body fat. For a more complete picture, combine BMI with body fat percentage and waist circumference measurements.
